Dewey worked for Warren Little and Lund in Spokane at that time and continued working for them until he retired. (This is a letter that my Mom wrote me telling about 3 Shafer stories. I have included a scan of the letter along with the typed text.)

Dear Paul & Family,

Well, here’s the Shafer story about the bandits during the depression. I don’t have the facts straight, so you can chose. ha ha Dad, Dewey Shafer, was driving Mom, Betty & Gene somewhere in a covered pickup or maybe a van, on the way to? in Southern Idaho or Washington? Anyway, Dad knew he was being followed by suspicious characters, so threw his wallet out the window & memorized the location.

Sure enough they stopped Dad. I don’t know if they frisked him or not, but decided to check the back. Apparently the kids were sleeping, but groaned & the bandits couldn’t tell if they were kids or adults so left. Dad went back & retrieved his wallet.

I told you the story about the little blind dog who nipped the legs of Dad & Aunt Ruth’s run away horse, who was pulling their buggy which was headed right for the river. This might have been in Panapus where Grandpa Shafer had a wheat ranch we were thinking of going there, but went through Pullman instead.

You probably remember the story about Uncle Jim, Dad’s Brother, putting skunks under the little country grade school, probably in Pompa, so school was out for at least a week.

I think I told you about Aunt Orpha’s niece, (Mom’s Brother, Jess Evans wife) and how she used to take the pins out of the door hinges so the door would fall on people. Then she’d take the front of drawers almost off so you can imagine what would happen! Etc.

Colfax is a city in Whitman County, Washington, United States. It is situated amidst wheat-covered hills in a valley at the confluence of the Palouse River's north and south forks. Route 195, which forms the town's main street, intersects with Route 26 here; in the past, Colfax also lay at the junction of three railway lines. It is the Whitman CountyGR6 seat and was named after Grant's Vice President, Schuyler Colfax. The population was 2,844 at the 2000 census

History
Palouse Indians were the first known human inhabitants of the Colfax area. White settlers arrived in the summer of 1870, and soon built a sawmill. A flour mill and other businesses followed, and Colfax soon grew into a prosperous town. Originally, pioneer citizen James Perkin called the settlement "Belleville" in honor of his girlfriend; when he found a new love, he changed the town's name to Colfax.[1]

Colfax was officially incorporated on November 29, 1881. In 1889-1890, the town vied with several other finalists to become the site of a new agricultural college, present-day Washington State University; the honor, however, ultimately fell to nearby Pullman.

The population reached 3,500 in 1903, and has hovered near 3,000 ever since.[2]

Robert Osborne, Hollywood historian and journalist, prime-time host of Turner Classic Movies. As a teenager, he worked at The Rose, a long-defunct movie theater in downtown Colfax, and broke both arms while putting Elizabeth Taylor's name on the marquee.[4]

Geography and Climate

Colfax is surrounded by steep aeolian hills, often harboring wheatfields; this one lies just outside town on the south sideColfax is located in southeastern Washington at 46°53′3″N, 117°21′49″W (46.884033, -117.363668)GR1, at an elevation of 1962 feet. The nearest cities are Spokane and Lewiston/Clarkston. The area is geologically interesting, lying in the midst of the fertile Palouse country, with the Rocky Mountains to the east, the Channeled Scablands to the west, and the Snake River to the south.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.3 km² (1.7 mi²). 4.3 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. The Palouse River, confined for flood control to a concrete bed that reduces it to an eighteen-inch-wide stream during the dry season, runs through the middle of town, parallel to Main Street.

Colfax has a four-season climate, with hot, dry summers, cold winters, and a rainy season that generally runs from autumn til spring. The annual rainfall averages less than 20 inches a year. This climate, together with the deep, rich palouse topsoil, makes for near-ideal wheat growing conditions.

Tourist attractions
The Codger Pole is a chainsaw-carved monument by master carver Jonathan LaBenne. It is located on Main Street and commemorates a 1988 rematch, 50 years after the original 1938 game, between archrival football teams from Colfax High School and St. John. At 65 feet tall, it is the largest sculpture of its type in the world, and consists of portraits, carved into five upended red cedar logs, of the 51 players involved. The players are shown in old age but are wearing the football uniforms of the thirties.
The Perkins House, on Perkins Avenue, is a meticulously restored Victorian home built in 1886. The original owner was James Perkins, a leading pioneer citizen. The Perkins family occupied the home until 1968, by which time it was sadly dilapidated and slated for demolition. In 1970, the Whitman County Historical Society assumed ownership and began restoring the house, which is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Behind the house is a log cabin, built in 1870, where Perkins lived for sixteen years. This cabin is the oldest standing structure in Whitman County. The house is open for tours from May to September, on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Colfax Golf Course and Country Club is a nine-hole course beside the river on North Palouse River Road.
McDonald Park, located immediately north of the golf course, consists of playing fields surrounded by a paved walking/jogging path. Regional baseball and softball tournaments are hosted here.
The Colfax Trail is a three-mile path converted from a disused railway line. It begins at a gravel quarry off Highway 26, just beyond the town's western limit, and follows the Palouse River westward, traversing cow pastures, pine woods, wetlands, and basalt cliffs.

Public services, businesses, and churches
Among the town's other amenities are a public school, a library, and a hospital, several city parks, a skateboard park, and a swimming pool. As the county seat, Colfax is also home to the Whitman County Courthouse and the Whitman County Jail. The local government consists of a seven-member City Council and a mayor (currently Norma Becker, serving her fifth term).

There is a small assortment of businesses, including building and farm supply stores, a medium-sized grocery (Rosauers), a pharmacy, a fitness center, a florist, a coffee stall, four gift shops, a pawn shop, and ten restaurants. Local service-based businesses include lawyers, dentists, auto mechanics, banks, and retirement homes.

Switchboard.com lists nine churches in Colfax, including one Catholic Church , one Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (aka LDS or Mormon), and various Protestant and non-denominational churches.

A weekly newspaper called Whitman County Gazette is published in Colfax.

Annual Events
Palouse Plowing Bee and Palouse Empire Threshing Bee– held respectively on the third weekend in April and the first weekend after Labor Day. Farmers demonstrate traditional plowing and harvesting methods in a 15-acre field five miles west of town.
Perkins House Ice Cream Social – Held on the last Sunday in June on the lawn of the Perkins House; ice cream, pie, live Dixieland music, displays, and free house tours.

Palouse Empire Fair – Held in early September five miles west of town; a midway, a rodeo, live music, and barns full of livestock and handicrafts.
Lighted Christmas Parade– a night parade held in downtown Colfax, Mill Street, on the first Tuesday in December. Festive floats, free candy, special programs at the public library, and Santa Claus.

Demographics
As of the 2000 censusGR2, there were 2,844 people, 1,191 households, and 740 families residing in the city. The population density was 657.5/km² (1,705.6/mi²). There were 1,357 housing units at an average density of 313.7/km² (813.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.16% White, 0.25% African American, 0.84% Native American, 2.07% Asian, 0.60% from other races, and 2.07% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.48% of the population.

There were 1,191 households out of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples living together, 6.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.24 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 22.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years, well above the national average of 35.3--possibly due to the presence of several retirement communities. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $36,622, and the median income for a family was $47,589. Males had a median income of $32,188 versus $26,349 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,519. About 6.1% of families and 9.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.7% of those under age 18 and 6.8% of those age 65 or over.

Charles was kind enough to share these memories about my Grandmother Leona Shafer.

Just a short note on "Mom" Shafer When I first met Leona Shafer I was but 16 years old and working in a fruit and vegetable market. Seems she would always come in on a Saturday around noon or a little later. I always tried to wait on her myself as she was so pleasing and knew exactly what she wanted. It made working so much easier. This one day she came in and had a beautiful looking girl with her. In a little while I found out that the girl was her daughter, Betty. At the same time I turned to a fellow worker (Bob Lepano) and told him - "See that young lady over there at the meat counter?" He said "Yes I see her" Anyway I told him - "That’s the girl I’m going to marry." and I hadn’t even met her yet. After getting what she wanted from the butcher shop, Leona Shafer and her daughter came to the vegetable section. And of course I waited on her. I was introduced to her daughter and at that moment I was completely fouled up. Leona wanted two bunches of radishes and one bunch of onions. I got her two bunches of onions and one bunch of radishes and the foul up continued. Leona could see what was happening and she just grinned and bore with me. It took quiet a while after that before I even had a chance to ask her daughter out for a date. That first date with Betty brought me to the Shafer home on Shannon Street in Spokane. There is where I really started to get to know Leona (Mom) Shafer. Mom Shafer was the kind of person you could put your trust in or ask her a question and always get a sane and simple complete answer to your inquiry. That is when she became my second Mom. Mom always seemed to stand up for me, much to the amazment of her kids (Betty and Gene). When something came up Mom and I would talk about it and come up with an answer. We would tell stories that we had heard and could hardly wait until our next meeting to share them. I never had to worry about Betty when I was in the service as I knew Mom and Dewey were taking excellant care of her. And when my daughter appeared on the scene Mom was right there to help out. I was always pulling tricks on Mom. As an example - One day I was standing in their hallway and leaned against the wall opening to the living room. I reached up and ran my fingers on the woodwork above the opening and brought down a smidgen of dust. I accused Mom of not being a very good housekeeper. Mom was just about five foot tall and it would have been impossible for her to even come close to reaching that heighth. She never forgot it and neither did I. It was done many more times after that. Mom Shafer is someone I could never ever forget. She was there when I needed an answer and her answers were always correct and the way they should be. Mom treatrd me as one of the family from the first day I entered her home. She was a grand and upstanding lady who I loved as a mother and a person I could depend on. May she rest in the peace and comfort of heaven as she made things so on earth.

I asked my uncle Charles Mantkus to share some of his recolections and feelings about my Grandfather John Dewey Shafer. With his permission I share this.

Dewey (John Dewey) Shafer was a man of 'Giving & Sharing' A man that would stand up for you and be there when and if his need was needed.
Betty told me of the caring and his looking out for his family. Back when times were tough and jobs difficult to find, Dewey saw to it that the kids (Betty and Gene) were taken care of first, then his wife (Leona) and if anything was left he would Only then accept it.
Dewey had a gun collection that he had saved for many years and when things were difficult and when work was hard to find, he sold his collection of guns (one at a time) to see that there was sufficient food on the table or that certain items needed were able to be bought.
During WWII when I was in the service, Dewey not only brought Grandpa Ramsey into his home but also Betty and our daughter Joanne. This way he was able to see that they were all taken care of and he didn't have to worry about them.
In case of an emergency Dewey could be counted on to help in any way that he could. I really didn't know Dewey that well until after WWII. I came home to a wife that I hadn't seen in over three years and a daughter I had never seen. I had to get a job to help support my family. Jobs were scarce as all the G.I.'s coming back home at almost the same time made employment difficult to find as positions were taken up all at once. Dewey took me under his wing and got me a job working with him. I knew nothing about Steamfitting nor did I know anything about the repair and installation of heating equipment. Dewey worked with me and taught me all that he knew regarding the complicated electrical systems in the General Electric heating systems. This plus the installation of the large industrial heating equipment for schools and large plants, etc. When I finally learned enough to be on my own as Dewey's assistant; he and I covered Eastern Oregon, Eastern Washington, Northern Idaho and Western Montana. How he did all this by himself on 24/7 was difficult to understand. He was indispensable to General Electric and the company he worked for (Warren-Little & Lund in Spokane, Washington)
There are so many good things about Dewey that are difficult to bring to light with a proper description. Let me just say that John DEWEY Shafer was a kind hearted man that you could trust and depend on. A man that placed his family FIRST. When you needed any help, he was there. He was not only my father-in-law but he was also my friend. A man I was proud to know and proud to be with.

Life Story of Bonnie Dearing Shafer

I was born in Spokane, Washington on December 22, 1910. My elementary education was at Longfellow School. One of my teachers there was Miss Binna Mason. I was to meet her, again, when I moved to Rockwood Manor; as she was a resident, and she was at that time Mrs. Binna Mason Dummeier. I recall her in my grade school days as a fine, vigorous, young woman who was the basketball coach for the upper grade boys. Although she is now in Rockwood infirmary. I will never forget her vigor and “school spirit” when she gave her support to grade school athletics.

During my high school days my mother, my younger sister, and I toke swimming lessons at the Y.M.C.A. These days were very happy days and I will never forget the first time on the diving board!

I graduated from Hillyard High School in June, 1929. I attended collage and after the summer sessions I earned my B.A. Degree and Life Diploma; by that time Cheney Normal was known as Eastern Washington University.

In September 1935, I became the Interstate Grades teacher at Green Bluff School. As part of my duties there, I was required to train the pupils to prepare a program once each month for the “Community Club”, which held their meetings in the Green Bluff Grange Hall, which was located across the road from the Green Bluff School. During practice for the October meeting, the Master of the Green Bluff Grange and a young farmer in the area brought a load of wood for heating the Grange Hall. This young man whom I met on that day was to have great influence on my life. On our first date we went to a dance at the Green Bluff Grange Hall.

We had a long and enjoyable courtship and on June 29, 1940, we were married at the Coeur D’ Alene, Idaho Methodist Church. We rented the farm for a short time and then purchased it. I enjoyed the farm life for many years. I served as secretary for the Spokane County Unit of the Washington State Dairymen’s Federation for 2 or 3 years.

We were members at Mead United Methodist Church while on our farm and we keep our membership there.

I have learned in later years that two of my pupils at Green Bluff School have become ministers, and a son of one of my pupils became a priest.

One of my most frightening experiences on the farm was the day when there was a fire in timber near our buildings and “sparks” were falling near our buildings.

As a member of Peone Grange No. 910, I served as Chaplin, for at least three terms, and as Home Economics Chairman for two terms. During my second term as Home Economics Chairman, Peone Grange celebrated its 50th Anniversary, and we had a nice dinner with some County and State officers invited to enjoy the meal and bring greetings to our members. One of the hobbies we enjoyed was fishing at the lakes in North Eastern Washington. We owned our own boat and were glad to be able to spend part of the day on the water; even though we very seldom took home our limit of fish.

In 1979, I suggested that we sell our farm and we sold it. We then moved into Rockwood Manor on February 29, 1980. We are very happy to be residents of Rockwood manor. I have served as Floor Representative for the 5th Floor several times. I was Vespers Chairman for three years and I recommended that Rockwood Manor should have a Chaplin and my recommendation was accepted for which I was very grateful. Other offices which I have held have been Vice President of the Council, President of Council, and Program Chairman.

I appreciate the activities which we are offered at Rockwood Manor. During the Christmas Season the decorations are wonderful. The Easter Season activities are lovely, too. Our library is a joy to use for reference work, and other information.

The new Bell and Howell Projector is great for the Tuesday Evening Movies.

Bingo is fun on Friday afternoons, and whenever my schedule will allow I am learning the game “Tripoley”, which is a new one for me.

We appreciate the Food Service Department and their willingness to provide the special diets for the residents who are Diabetics.

Life Story of James Lester Shafer

My folks lived on a farm about halfway between Colfax and Pullman Washington, when I was born September 3, 1911.

The things that stand out about that place were my oldest sister Ruth getting married. After the wedding the reception was in our house, I don’t suppose I was more than one year old and what I remember about it was that I had been put to bed, but woke up and had to investigate noises in the house. I went out in my pajamas and saw the place full of people. My Mother saw me and rushed me back to bed.

Another thing that I remember was when my oldest Brother Dewey took me to the barnyard and sat me on the back of a gentle Colt. The Colt’s name was “Nig”.

When I was 3 years old my parents moved to a farm 6 miles South of La Crosse, Washington. I think we lived there about ten years.

I attended grade school at Pampa, Washington for 5 1/2 years.

Dad had a wheat and cattle ranch and I can remember many pleasant happenings, among them the Box Socials at school and Father and Son banquets at the Methodist church in La Crosse, Washington.

When I was thirteen years old my parents moved to a farm in Ferry County about halfway between Curlew, and Republic, Washington. I started to school in the 6 grade at Karamin which was about 1/4 of a mile from home so my sister Aileen and I were able to walk to school and go home for lunch.

Karamin had 2 teachers – one thought the first five grades, the other teacher taught the sixth through the tenth grades.

When I was in the Eighth grade Karamin consolidated with Republic, Washington and my sister Aileen and my Brother Frank and I had to ride twelve miles to school on a school bus.

I would get out of bed at 4:00 A.M. and go to the barn, feed, milk and clean stables for thirty milk cows. Dad would turn the separation by hand to separate the cream from the milk, and then carry the skim milk to the hogs. After my chores at the barn were finished I would go to the house, clean up, change clothes, eat breakfast and be ready to meet the bus sometime between 7:00 and 7:30 A.M.

I graduated from High School in May 1931. There were nine of us in the senior class and we went on a “Senior Sneak” to OROVILLE, Washington.

In May of 1932 my folks moved to a small farm (80 acres) near Colfax, Washington. Those were really hard times and I got small jobs working for farmers in the neighborhood.

On December 26, 1936 I left for Los Angeles, California to attend “National Schools” which was a trade school. I enrolled in a class that taught Electricity, Radio, Television and Talking Pictures and in November 24, 1937 - I received a “Radiotelephone First Class” License. Jobs were mighty hard to find and by that time. I had my “Belly Full” of city life so I went back home to live with my folks for two more years.

I think that it was in the fall of 1935 I had met a real nice “School Mom” and of course she was one reason I went back. I rented an 80 acre farm across the road from my parent’s farm and on June 29, 1940, we were married. In 1941 we bought the farm.

We bought some cows and chickens and then made our living. But the chickens only lasted a few years and we got rid of them. We kept on milking cows and shipping milk until – I think about 1973- then we sold them. So we could spend a lot of time at “Expo 74”. We bought season tickets and spent many enjoyable days at Expo.

1975 and 1976 I continued to farm the land. Then the next 3 years I rented the land to a neighbor. We made many enjoyable trips to nearby lakes – fishing.

In the spring of 1979, I was sitting in our living room reading; Bonita came in and said a man is out here who would like to try to sell our farm, shall we list it with him? I said o.k. and in the fall of ’79 we sold it. Then we bought a 2 room apartment at Rockwood Manor. We moved in on the 29th of February, 1980. A double was not available at that time so for 6 months we lived in rooms 720 and 521.

Then in July 1980, we moved into rooms 503 and 505. We have never been sorry we moved in here.

Among the activities I enjoy are shuffleboard, pool and operating the movie projector on Tuesday evenings.

The Stamm family came from Schleitheim and there were Bechtold's in Schaffhausen. The man at the State house didn’t have any information but gave the name of Willie Bachtold who had the records in Schleitheim. Willie Bechtold’s house had records. A man named Eugene Stamm had the records.

Margaretha Anna Stamm lived in Schaffhausen, the house was white stucco and very neat. I remembered her telling me about her home. She said the cows lived underneath. She told me about coming in from the cold and her Mother put them on a shelf next to the fireplace. When we went to Europe we visited a home in Switzerland. It looked like what I expected from what my Mother had told me.

Mom’s family went to North America in April of 1881. They traveled in the hold of the ship. Her Mother got sick. Mom’s Mother and Father both died later and Mom was placed in a home for orphans. She told me that the food was terrible, that the people in charge ate very well though. She and her sister were put on a train with other orphans. They went to Illinois. There people toke them. Mom was taken by a woman. People in the community said she was a lady of ill repute and not a fit place for Mom and she went to live with an elderly lady who smoked a pipe. She was to week to light it and Mom had to light it for her. She said she learned to like tobacco.

After that she went to live with Uncle Jim and Aunt Zada. About that time Dads parents both died and he went to live with Uncle Jim (his oldest brother). They went to school together. They went to the Fifth Reader. That is what it was called then. They fell in love and lived in a small house, but later lived in a nice new one.

Uncle Jesse and Aunt Lilly (Dad’s Sister) came west and bought a place near Pullman. They did well and wrote to Mom and Dad to come ‘out west”. They decided to do that. Margaret was a baby. Mom said she carried her (on the train) on a pillow.

I was born at Colfax as were Jim and Frank before me. Then my dad wanted a larger farm so they bought one at Colfax and bought a larger place at La Crosse (600 acres). They raised wheat. It was a very old house, so when they could they built a big new house, 4 bed rooms, only one bath. It was on the main floor. So was Mom and Dads bedroom. They cooked and ate in the basement. The main floor kitchen was never used. There was an elevator and Jim and Elwyn (sp?) and Gwen and Don Kraus tried to ride in it.

Ruth and her family lived close by and helped farm. She was married to Winfield Kraus at Colfax. I remember Mama saying Ruth wanted a big home wedding and how hard it was with me as a baby. I loved playing with Gwen, Elwyn and Dan.

Then on Sunday Dewey, Bob and Winfield decided to go swimming. They went to Palouse falls. People swam under the falls. Winfield evidently got into a whirlpool and drowned. It was terrible. Ruth then moved to La Crosse and was Telephone Operator. Mom and Dad helped her quite a lot. The children spent a lot of time with us so I sort of grew up with them.

Dad was doing really well, but then some crooked guys sold him some fake Oil Well stock and he lost almost everything. He held a farm sale a bought the place at republic. We moved to Republic, a cattle ranch. On the train up there just before we got to Republic Mom said “Why did you bring me to this God Forsaken Place”?

I went to Karamin to the 5th and 6th grades. Then they closed the Karamin School and we went by School Bus to Republic. I rode horse back after toe cows in the evenings. When I was Senior Pauline and Fred talked Dad into moving to Mackey, Idaho, to raise potatoes. Dad sent the furniture and equipment by train and we drove down. Dewey and Leona and her two kids Gene and Betty all went to Mackey.

Things didn’t work out. The deal on the farm fell through so we didn’t stay. We didn’t go back to Republic. That is when Mom and Dad bought the farm at Greenbluff, My friends from Greenbluff called and wanted me to come up there for Graduation. They said that I would be Valedictorian, but the folks could not afford to send me there. I was promise a job at 5 cent and 10 cent store where a friend from Republic was manager, but it didn’t pay enough to pay for my room and board.

?D.A. Sullivan got a road job that went to Green Bluff. The men camped on the farm. They wanted to have mom feed them. So she said she would. I helped her. I made the desserts, pies and cakes. She cooked the rest of the meal. I usually waited on tables. Ralph Dayley (Dads cousin) was the boss. He liked to tease me. That was when I met Herman Kinney. He was on of the main ones. He drove a tractor. He fell for me. We were married later in Colfax. Mom and Dad sold the house and moved into an acreage on Market street. That is where my dad had a heart attack and passed away. Frank and Loraine lived next door. Mom sold the acreage and moved into a small house near Garland.

We moved to Spokane from Colville and brought a new duplex in Alice?. We wanted Mom to move in the other side, but my brothers objected. I could have taken care of her. They moved her in to Riverview Terrace, a retirement home. She lived there several years, then passed away from Heart Failure. The Doctor called, said her heart was just worn out. She was buried at Colfax next to my Dad and baby Brother Gerald.

Leona Grimm Evans Shafer

LEONA GRIMM EVANS SHAFER
November 17, 1900 - April 24, 1994

Leona Grimm Evans was born November 17, 1900, to David and Ida Evans in Colfax, Washington. She had two older brothers, Jess and Earl, who were very close and very protective of her. Leona loved to dance and sing. She had a beautiful voice. Leona liked to listen to Kate Smith sing and knew all of her songs, including one of her favorites, “When the Moon Comes over the Mountain”. As a Jean Mantkus. At this time (1943), Leona’s stepfather had come to live with them. Leona and Dewey insisted that their daughter, Betty and granddaughter, Joanne come and live with them also. So they had a full house. During all of this Leona kept up with her Central United Methodist choir work, her affiliation with the Moose teenager she sang at weddings, funerals, and in the choir at church. When Leona was about 17 she got a job at Potete’s Candy Shop, where she learned to make hand-dipped chocolates. At the age of 19 she married Delbert Gallaugher and later had two children, Betty born in 1922, and Russell Gene in 1924. Delbert passed away and left Leona a widow at the age of 26. Leona’s stepfather, George Ramsey, being a widower, had Leona and the two children come and live with him on the ranch just outside Potlatch, Idaho. Leona took over the household duties, such as the cooking, laundry, etc., until she was able to get a job on a wheat ranch at harvest time. At the age of 28 she met and fell in love with John Dewey Shafer. They were married after a courtship of one month. After a period of time they moved to Republic, Washington, to be with Dewey’s parents who had a wheat ranch there. The latter part of 1928, Leona, Dewey, and the two children moved to Spokane, Washington. During the Depression, Leona worked in a bakery while Dewey was able to find part-time work. Leona was an excellent seamstress, so she was always able to make clothing for her family and herself. As time went on and things were better financially, they moved to a home on Shannon, just across Have male Junior High School where Betty and Gene attended. Then in March 1939, Leona and Dewey had a baby girl, Sally Jo. War broke out December 7, 1941, and in February of 1942 Betty married Charles Mantkus at St. John’s Cathedral in Spokane. That May of 1942, Charles enlisted in the Army and Leona’s only son Gene went into the Navy. During WWII, Leona would cry every time the songs “White Christmas” or “Danny Boy” were played because of Charles and Gene being in the service.

In August of 1943, Leona had her first granddaughter, Joanne Lodge and also with Sally’s school activities.

In 1947, they moved to a 10-acre chicken and garden farm on Cherry Lane in the Glenrose area. They would hold big canning bees to process the vegetables grown in the garden.

In 1952, Russel Gene married Patricia Whittekiend and later 2 more of Leona’s granddaughters were born-Kathy in 1960 and Karri in 1968.

Leona and Dewey became grandparents again in 1953-a grandson, John Michael Mantkus. The grandchildren loved being with their grandma and grandpa and spent many happy days with them. Leona always lied to have Christmas at her home and she made it look like a fairyland.

In the spring of 1972, the folks sold the farm and moved to a nice little house on Thurston and Hogan in Spokane. The grandchildren loved to stay all night. Leona was the best cook and always kept her home clean and tidy. They had many holiday dinners with family and Dad still gardened.

Sally married Zenas Burrows in 1974. They had 8 children between them. In 1984, Sally moved the folks, with Gene’s help, to a Coeur d’Alene retirement home so she could watch over them since she lived in Coeur d’Alene.

Dad had to go into a nursing home in March 1985 because of arthritis in his back and that broke Mother’s heart. Dewey Shafer died in 1986. Leona’s health deteriorated and she soon had to go into an adult care home. Her strength eventually got better after a year and she was able to move to Woodway Inn Retirement Home. She was such a feisty little woman but enjoyed the friends there, especially Olive Boone. Leona’s son Gene died in February of 1990.

In March 1992, Leona moved back to Spokane where Sally now lived. Leona tried Camlu Retirement home for a few months but by the end of May she moved to Sunshine Gardens Care Center. She received excellent care there, with almost daily visits from family and friends, especially Blanch Gamon and Mary Wham.

She was a loving grandma and was crazy about babies. When the nurse’s aides would bring their babies to work, Leona had to hold them. She herself was blessed with 7 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, besides 5 step grandchildren and 12 step great grandchildren.

On a Sunday afternoon Sally visited Leona to read poetry and look at pictures. When she saw a large picture of Jesus she seemed to relax and be comfortable. When Jesus’ name was mentioned, she’d bow her head reverently and seem tearful. The nurse said she seemed to know she was going to pass on. She spent the night before her death just looking up at the ceiling in anticipation.

Leona Shafer died on April 24, 1994, at Sunshine Gardens here in Spokane. She will be well loved and long remembered by all who knew her.

Johann Friederick Kirshof

Leona Grimm Evans Mother was Ida Florence Grimm, her Mother was Rebecca Kiracofe. Rebecca's Father was Henry (Georg Heinrich) Kiracofe and his Fathers name was Johann Friederick Kirshof who was married to Carhrine Wacker. So He was Leona's Great, Great Gramdfather. I happened upon this short information about him a few years ago on Ancestry.com

Frederick Kiracofe (Friedrich Kirchhof) was a part of the German Auxiliary troops brought over during the American Revolution to aid the British Troops. In the records of the Johannes Schwalm Historical Assocaition, he was a Musketeer in the von Riedesel Regiment under Claus Reuter. He was captured in the Battle of Saratoga in October 1777, and sold himself as an indentured servant. Our next knowledge of him is his marriage to the widow, Catharine Wacker Bowman in 1782 in Shenandoah Co., VA. In 1783, Frederick purchased land in Hudson’s Crossroads, Shenendoah Co. from his father-in-law, Johannes Wacker and his wife, Margaret, the step mother of Catharine. After Catharine’s death, Frederick married Barbara Koontz and they moved to Sangerville, Augusta Co., VA. In 1799. The baptismal records of his children in the Shenandoah Co. from 1785 to 1797 are in the Zion-Pine Lutheran Register with the exception of Anna Christina which is in the Zion-Pine Reformed Register. KIRCHHOF - My ancester, Johann Friedrich Kirchhof, according to the legend carried down in the family, was captured in the Battle of Trenton, and escaped at Carlisle, PA. He made his way into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where he married (1) on 30 Dec. 1782 to Catharine Wacker (Bowman) and (2) on 24 Feb. 1795 to Barbara Koontz. He is the ancestor of the Kiracofe, Caricofe, and Karicofe familes of Virginia. I am interested in finding documentation confirming this legend.

JSHA was named in recognition of Johannes Schwalm, a Hessian, serving in von Knyphausen's Regiment, which along with other German auxiliary troops, was captured at the battle of Trenton. Thousands of German auxiliaries to the British Crown remained in America after the Revolution, and many, like Johannes, settled in the Pennsylvania Dutch area of Pennsylvania. JSHA was organized to pool information of several descendants who were (separately and unknown to each other) researching Johannes and his contemporaries.

Sally Jo's first marrage was to Ron Campbell and they had Scott and Michelle Campbell and Zena's first marrage was two Terry Heath they had Julie, Susan (Sue), Richard (Rich), James (Jim) and David (Dave). They later married each other and had me Paul Andrew Burrows. This is a picture of Scott, Jim and myself.
